When my twelve-year-old son, Drew, had only months left, Dr. Harris brought laughter back into his hospital room. I had judged his tattoos before noticing his kindness. Then twelve members of his motorcycle club arrived with a vest naming Drew their honorary brother. For a boy still aching over his absent father’s broken promises, their presence meant everything. But Drew had arranged a surprise, too: he wanted the doctor to reclaim the brotherhood he had abandoned after his younger brother died.
During a hospital-approved outdoor ceremony, Drew offered Dr. Harris his old vest and reminded him that riding again would not mean forgetting his brother. This time, the doctor put it on. Drew died weeks later, but the men never disappeared from our lives. They called, visited, and organized a memorial ride. They could not soften the loss of my son. They did make sure I never faced that grief alone.
