What began as an extraordinary act of love between a son and his father ended in heartbreak.

In January 2018, a 24-year-old electrical engineer named Kamran Laghari learned that his father, Mujahid Khan Laghari, was suffering from serious liver disease and needed a transplant.

The family was from the Muzaffargarh area of Pakistan, and doctors had reportedly advised that a liver transplant was necessary.

Kamran made a decision few people would ever have to face.

He volunteered to donate part of his own liver to his father. 

He Knew There Were Risks

Living liver donation is possible because the liver has a remarkable ability to regenerate.

A healthy donor can give a portion of the organ to another person, and over time both the donor’s remaining liver and the transplanted portion can grow and regain function.

But it is still major surgery.

According to reports at the time, Kamran was warned that the operation carried potentially serious complications.

His family was also reportedly concerned about the risk.

Still, he wanted to go ahead.

His goal was simple:

save his father’s life.

The Transplant Worked for His Father

The operation achieved what Kamran had hoped for.

His father received part of his liver and survived the transplant.

For a family that had been facing the possibility of losing a father, that should have been the beginning of a celebration.

But the story took a devastating turn.

Kamran suffered complications following the operation.

The 24-year-old did not recover.

He died after donating the part of his liver that had helped save his father’s life. 

Then Came an Even More Heartbreaking Detail

At the time the story was reported, Mujahid was still receiving treatment at Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore.

And according to the reports, he had not yet been told that his son had died.

Imagine waking up knowing that part of your son’s liver was now keeping you alive — without knowing that the son who gave it to you was no longer there.

Kamran had already been buried while his father remained in treatment. 

A Son’s Final Act of Love

Kamran was reportedly the eldest of five siblings.

He was only 24 years old and worked as an electrical engineer.

His decision was not made because he was unaware of the danger.

Reports said he chose to proceed despite warnings about the possible complications.

The transplant ultimately gave his father something priceless:

more life.

But it came at a cost no family could have expected. 

The Story Still Resonates Years Later

Living organ donation has saved countless lives, and a tragic case like this should not be interpreted as meaning that such procedures normally end this way.

What Kamran’s story does show is the enormous courage involved when a healthy person willingly undergoes major surgery to help someone they love.

For this family, the operation created one of the most painful contradictions imaginable.

A father survived because of his son.

And the son lost his life after trying to save his father.
